Hey guys, welcome back to FurHomer Videos. This time we're going to be taking a look at the
0:04
chromiest chrome. And those of you who follow my channel will probably find this twinned with the
0:08
video from a couple of weeks ago when we looked at the rustiest rust. And no matter who you are
0:13
you're probably wondering, do those products work well together? And I'm happy to report
0:18
yes they do. So the chrome paint I'm looking at today is the chrome color from Alclad 2
0:24
You're probably aware of different chrome paints from the likes of Green Stuff World, Culture Hustle or Molotov but with the exception of Green Stuff World none of those paints are made
0:33
specifically for models and when I looked at the Green Stuff World specifically the airbrush
0:38
application looked kind of matte and the brush application well you lost all the details and
0:44
that brings me to the Alclad II colors and whilst I'm going to focus on the airbrush in this video
0:50
yep you can brush this stuff on the key to getting this stuff right is in the primer and once again
0:56
I did a video a few months back that nobody watched comparing different types of primer and which would give us the most reflective metallic coat
1:03
The best, meaning most reflective, result we got was actually from the Alklad 2's black gloss primer
1:09
And so the first thing to do is prime these models in a gloss black. The glossier the better
1:15
But because these are enamel-based paints, my airbrush spray booth just wasn't doing the trick
1:19
So I made sure to ventilate the room I'm spraying them in, wear a protective mask, and have the ventilator booth on at full
1:26
This stuff even smells dangerous so please take your protection when using it seriously
1:31
It's really important when doing this initial coat to put on multiple thin coats rather than
1:36
one thick one. However if you're painting this on with a brush then you don't really have much
1:40
choice as to how thick the coat's going to be. Thankfully though when brushing this on with a
1:44
nice flat synthetic brush it actually flattens down and levels out like a dream. I know I'm
1:49
spending a lot of time on the black primer but as I said this is the most important part of this
1:54
technique. The more shiny and reflective this initial base color is, the better result you're
1:59
going to get from your chrome Applying the chrome itself is very similar in technique to applying the gloss black base coat Just try to slow yourself down when doing this You see the mirror effect happen rather instantaneously So just trust in the technique very thin coat move to your next model
2:15
come back in about 20 minutes to half an hour. Build it up steadily like this and the result will be an absolutely perfect mirror finish
2:24
The result you get kind of reminds me of the chrome you would see on a few 80s and 90s action figures
2:29
It really is incredibly reflective. As for painting it on with a brush, well I would recommend in this case trying to get it on in one coat
2:38
Unfortunately this does mean that it's going to clog some of the detail
2:42
And you also need to be very disciplined with the direction of your strokes. Here I just slapped it on
2:48
As you can see it's left quite a few streaks and marks in different directions across the surface depending on which direction my brush was going in
2:56
But a more practiced approach where you pick out individual forms like a foot, a leg, a shoulder pad, and paint those all in the same direction will give you a much cleaner result
3:07
And that's all there is to it initially. Now you've got yourself a beautifully reflective chrome model
3:12
And this special effect really stands out. So what next? Well, I'm glad you asked. So let's look at what I did
3:20
first i played about with alcalade 2's black chrome and tried to give a bit of a zenithal
3:26
highlight between the black chrome and the chrome and the first piece of advice here if you want to
3:31
try this is to apply the black chrome first and then apply the chrome over it but in all honesty
3:36
there's not enough tonal difference between these two colors for it to actually matter
3:40
so next i thought okay what about defining the individual shapes on the model and the easiest
3:46
way to do that, washes. So I started out with both Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade from Citadel
3:53
I also tried Tamiya's black and dark brown panel liners so I could get very defined recesses
3:59
I also tried some from AK Interactive including the Kerosene Leaks and Stains which is essentially
4:05
a blue wash I also used everyone tried and tested favourite Streaking Grime which I like to refer to as the grim dark now With the Citadel paints exactly what I expected would happen The washers themselves both Agrax and Norn Oil
4:20
have dulled down the chrome effect on the paint and left it much more matte than it was before
4:26
It's nicely defined the shadows and running everywhere really smooth, but unfortunately this has just taken away far too much
4:32
of what I was trying to achieve with that initial chrome layer. We've lost it
4:36
And with AK's enamel-based paints, I tried the usual way of splashing it all over the model and then wiping it off
4:42
Unfortunately, during this reductive stage, this also dulled down the chrome quite severely
4:47
and in a few cases where it reactivated the paint with the enamel medium
4:52
it actually started wiping it back to bare plastic. The Tamiya panel liners were actually my favourite result because they clearly defined the recesses
5:00
This allowed the chrome to remain super shiny, but clearly separated the individual parts that made up this model
5:06
so now I'm stuck without any way to significantly darken down the mirror effect without losing the
5:12
mirror effect so if you've found a reliable method great please let me know down in the
5:17
comments because I'd love to try it out the other thing I wanted to test out was protecting this
5:22
chrome layer and this seemed fairly straightforward just apply a gloss varnish over the top so I tried
5:28
AK's Valleos and Alkaladzone gloss varnishes unfortunately though the result of all of them
5:35
is a slight tarnish to the chrome layer. Thankfully though, with the chrome being enamel based
5:40
it's pretty hardy on its own and doesn't really need a protective coat. As for actually painting
5:45
these models, well again, this is where I felt rather limited. And that's when I remembered the
5:50
Stormcast Army painted by Garfi from Tale of Painters Block. And so I stole the yellow and
5:56
purple and painted it on this chrome Stormcast model. And it was really nice to find that the
6:01
paints went over this chrome quite easily. And whilst I kinda like the colours here
6:05
I'm not really loving it. The bit where I kicked myself came shortly after my decision
6:10
to paint the Space Marine that I showed at the beginning of this video. If only there
6:14
were another popular Canonical Space Marine chapter that I could actually use for this chrome effect Oh wait Silver Templars is a thing isn it And wasn my first ever YouTube tutorial showing people how to paint Silver Templars Space Marines Yeah Yeah it is
6:31
Maybe I should go with Silver Templars then. So yeah, I just took that model and then painted this
6:36
I started with the Tamiya Black panel liner for the recesses, then blocked in all the flat colors
6:41
using Pro Acryl paints. The one exception is Citadel's Screamer Pink, where I've done the
6:46
wax on the purity seals and the gold metallics is the gold from the vallejo metal color range
6:51
but this was a rather pale gold so i warmed it up with snakebite leather from citadel colors
6:56
contrast range and then the plasma and glow effects were done last by using citadel's
7:01
a thematic blue contrast paint i must admit i'm super happy with this result and i think the way
7:06
the chrome miniature came out is absolutely awesome and so yeah i highly recommend these
7:12
I'll add two colors if you want to achieve an effect like this. They also do a hologrammatic
7:16
chrome which I was going to do a separate video on but it's exactly the same as this video just
7:21
with a different and arguably cooler result. They also have a large series of candy colors which
7:27
I've recorded footage for and have a very different opinion about. Those semi-opaque colors go over
7:33
something like this chrome and leave a beautiful subsurface mirror effect and I'm looking forward
7:39
to sharing my opinions about those but I'm waiting for a response from Alclad before I say anything
7:44
