I'm learning how to paint Iron Warriors from Warhammer 40K, this episode I'm following tutorials from theseawesome creators: Pete the Wargamer: https://youtu.be/dFfZ-06cTDE The Painting Coach: https://youtu.be/eKOYmyAfSo0 Duncan Rhodes: https://youtu.be/DAnZjL-GsRI Juan Hidalgo: https://youtu.be/-mz4g5dcGHI

0:00
so i am a videographer by trade
0:02
certainly not
0:04
a miniature painter
0:06
my days out working usually look
0:08
something like this
0:12
so obviously weddings over the past
0:14
couple of years haven't been going ahead
0:16
as usual
0:17
and i got my introduction to this hobby
0:20
working as a videographer at games
0:22
workshop
0:24
ultimately i decided to leave and return
0:26
to my own business as things were
0:28
becoming
0:29
somewhat a little bit more normal but i
0:31
left with a couple of things
0:34
one was working with a bunch of really
0:37
great people who some of which i now get
0:40
to call my friends
0:41
and the second
0:43
is a ton of warhammer my name's patrick
0:47
and welcome to my pile of shame
0:52
so when i left uw at the tail end of
0:53
last year i had two options as i saw it
0:56
sell off what i had never really think
0:59
about it ever again or try and learn how
1:01
to paint it and here we are i am a
1:04
complete novice painter and the premise
1:06
of this show is only using
1:08
youtube content
1:10
painting tutorials made by fans and
1:12
creators of warhammer i am gonna try and
1:15
learn how to paint
1:17
or see how good a painter i can become
1:20
or
1:22
something when the new warpsmith was
1:23
released i decided i really wanted to
1:25
have a stab at painting it as an iron
1:27
warrior so in this first video i'm gonna
1:30
paint four different iron warriors from
1:32
four different youtube creators see
1:34
which one i like the best maybe i'll end
1:36
up merging
1:38
bits of them together to try and get
1:39
some practice come up with the color
1:41
scheme that i like the most
1:43
to paint my warp smith at the end and
1:45
diving straight into it the first
1:46
tutorial i'm going to have a go at is
1:48
from pete the wargamer oh and one last
1:51
thing before we get started all of these
1:53
pieces to camera
1:55
i'd be lying if i said this was the
1:56
first time i filmed them this video took
1:58
quite a while
2:00
i didn't really like some of the
2:02
talking bits that i did so you're gonna
2:05
notice some horrendous continuity errors
2:08
with the length of my beard and or hair
2:13
just try and get past it if you can
2:15
[Music]
2:17
so the first tutorial i'm going to try
2:18
and follow is the cheapest one on the
2:19
bunch which is speed painting and
2:21
warriors from peterborough gamer and
2:24
it's only seven paints under 30 quid
2:25
which is great and i've started off
2:28
spraying this guy black and i can tell
2:30
that i've done a terrible job at
2:32
removing some of the mould lines but to
2:33
make up for that i have drilled and
2:35
broken the gun barrel um so first things
2:38
first what i'm gonna actually before i
2:40
start dry brushing i'm gonna drink lots
2:42
of tea from the hollowed out school of
2:43
spider-man and then i'm gonna dry brush
2:46
it all with lead belcher
2:50
that's right i'm here to show you how to
2:52
speed
2:55
[Music]
3:00
[Music]
3:08
[Music]
3:21
[Music]
3:44
so i've just finished applying the
3:45
contrast paint to the leg and the
3:46
shoulder and whilst i'm waiting for that
3:48
to dry
3:49
i guess i'm just contemplating how on
3:51
earth i'm going to try and do these
3:52
hazard stripes and have them not look
3:55
heresy
3:57
i've never tried to paint perfectly
3:58
straight lines never mind
4:00
lots of them
4:02
in succession so we'll see how that goes
4:04
uh in peace tutorial he does just paint
4:07
them on the leg you'll see i've done the
4:08
shoulder pad here i wish i could say
4:10
that was because i fancied the challenge
4:12
and wanted to make things harder for
4:13
myself but in reality
4:15
i overloaded my brush
4:17
up painting the trim which went on to
4:19
the shoulder pad tried to cover it up
4:21
with some blood belcher but it didn't
4:23
really match the rest of the finish
4:26
on the marine so slapped some paint on
4:29
it made things harder for myself
4:31
i will regret it i mean is it but we'll
4:34
see what happens
4:36
[Music]
4:57
so the hazard stripes are on couple of
4:58
washes later with some contrast paints
5:00
and this guy is finished
5:03
following that tutorial was nice and
5:05
straightforward i feel like i've managed
5:06
to replicate what was on screen
5:08
reasonably well probably through the
5:10
contrast paints rather than my own skill
5:13
um but it's a really cool looking marine
5:16
nice and weathered i think the dry
5:17
brushing has saved a ton of time no edge
5:20
highlights inside but you still get that
5:21
definition on the corners and stuff like
5:23
that which is which is awesome um
5:26
if i'm getting a bit pinnickety with
5:28
what i've done i think the hazard
5:30
stripes could use a bit more work the
5:31
ones on the shoulder pad especially are
5:33
a bit bulbous and a bit close together
5:35
at points not as uniform as i would have
5:37
liked the ones on the legs
5:39
which i did afterwards
5:41
are
5:41
a significant improvement even though
5:43
some of the angles are a bit
5:46
but um yeah that tutorial was great
5:48
super happy with how that guy looks
5:50
on to the next one
5:51
[Music]
5:52
[Applause]
5:54
so the second tutorial i'm gonna try and
5:56
follow is painting iron warriors by the
5:59
painting coach
6:00
i have watched a bunch of his videos
6:02
before i do really like them it's
6:04
probably got something to do with his
6:05
accent it's amazing if i can try and get
6:08
a sound bite of him saying balthazar
6:10
gold i would use that as my alarm there
6:13
was one paint that for the life of me i
6:15
couldn't get a hold of and that was
6:17
chrome model air by vallejo so instead
6:20
i opted for
6:23
green stuff world chrome metal airbrush
6:27
and just in case it was crap
6:30
i got green stuff world chrome metal and
6:34
we will see
6:35
how these go
6:37
well
6:38
i mean you know
6:39
that i'm filming this after the fact so
6:41
i know how it went
6:42
but you don't
6:44
[Music]
6:47
[Applause]
6:48
[Music]
7:20
[Applause]
7:22
[Music]
7:27
[Applause]
7:41
so when it came time to use the chrome
7:43
paints i did what
7:45
pretty much i've seen everybody do on
7:47
youtube and is put air paints straight
7:50
onto a wet palette and with this green
7:51
stuff all their paint as you can see it
7:53
just dispersed
7:55
absolutely everywhere and was completely
7:57
unusable trying to brush it
7:59
onto the model so thankfully i obviously
8:03
bought the normal
8:04
chrome metallic paint and putting that
8:07
onto my wet pallet it seemed like we
8:08
were getting off to a good start but
8:10
after a while i noticed it was clogging
8:12
up my brush and looking at the palette
8:14
it all just seemed to be congealing into
8:17
some kind of weird chrome
8:20
goo and was completely unusable so
8:23
i just put it in a normal dry palette
8:26
and i have to say with this paint
8:29
specifically
8:31
i didn't really like
8:34
the texture of it it's very different to
8:37
what i'm used to which is basically
8:38
citadel paints this was quite expensive
8:41
it was over a fiver a bottle and
8:44
i wasn't really a fan
8:46
but i wanted to paint these guys i
8:48
wanted to use a chrome paint uh
8:51
there we go lesson learned
8:57
[Applause]
9:01
so here we are finished this tutorial
9:03
and this iron warrior
9:06
having a look at it it is a lot brighter
9:09
initially
9:11
side by side under these studio lights i
9:13
did think i preferred
9:16
the look of pete's marine but over time
9:19
and especially looking at these
9:21
under normal room lighting from a
9:22
distance on a table
9:24
i am drawn to the shiny boy
9:28
i just
9:29
i think it just stands out that little
9:31
bit more i guess um which i don't know
9:33
if it's a good enough reason to
9:36
necessarily prefer one over the other
9:38
but there we go so looking at the
9:40
stripes first of all i tried to learn
9:43
from my mistakes on the first model and
9:46
if i made a mistake with the black
9:49
instead of widening the rest of the line
9:51
making the yellow smaller i would cut
9:53
back in with wraith bone and then go
9:55
over it with the contrast paint again
9:58
but as you can see on the gun
10:00
when i've done a few layers of the
10:02
contrast paint it has gone quite orange
10:04
where as you can see at the back it is
10:06
yellow which is the color it kind of
10:08
should be to begin with i really like
10:10
the bronze trim
10:11
and i'm pretty happy that i've managed
10:14
to go around it with the gray in the
10:17
black pauldron a direct comparison
10:20
between these two models is perhaps a
10:22
bit unfair pete's was a speed painting
10:24
tutorial and half the price half the
10:27
cost the results you get from this are
10:30
brilliant
10:31
but
10:32
again
10:34
slightly shiny
10:35
i do like the horns as well i don't know
10:37
why and the bag's cool but there we go
10:40
right moving on this time it is the man
10:43
himself mr tooth and coats iron warriors
10:46
by duncan rhodes to begin with there's a
10:49
lot of similar techniques in this
10:50
tutorial to the ones that pete uses
10:53
especially with the contrast paint over
10:54
the metallic so i'm going to bring you
10:56
in once i've got to that stage and i'm
10:58
adding in those extra details that are
11:00
in this video as a quick aside duncan is
11:03
obviously painting a havoc in his
11:05
tutorial i'm painting a regular marine
11:07
so with the bags and some of the leather
11:10
i am using the same recipe from the
11:13
painting coach and all i've done this
11:14
time is try and add
11:17
a bit more weathering into it i don't
11:19
really know if i did a good job or not
11:21
[Music]
11:52
thank
11:55
[Music]
12:06
so here we are with the finished
12:09
article and the thing that really jumps
12:11
out to me on this one that i like is the
12:14
eyes
12:15
i think they look
12:17
evil as
12:18
pharisee like the person in this is just
12:22
an evil brother
12:23
and he's probably quite ill as well the
12:26
red the orange the yellow and then the
12:28
little dot of white i mean i could have
12:30
done a better job of doing them of
12:31
course i could have done but
12:33
they do look really cool
12:35
i
12:36
don't like my application
12:39
of the wash
12:41
i think it's quite messy in places um
12:44
probably too much on my brush
12:47
you know me being completely inept and
12:50
out of my depth i think the contrast
12:52
paints perhaps work a touch better for
12:56
me but using that avalanche sunset when
12:58
i inevitably messed up painting the
13:01
stripes i could cut back in and it was
13:04
easier to correct those mistakes on a
13:07
dark marine these do stand out and i do
13:09
really like them i think the only
13:12
downside again completely my fault was
13:15
especially on the pauldron where i've
13:17
cut back in with the yellow you can see
13:20
some brush strokes and some and a bit of
13:22
a build up of paint i don't know if i
13:23
let the layer underneath completely dry
13:26
or the paint i was using wasn't quite
13:28
thinned enough
13:30
i'm sure someone will tell me in the
13:32
comments and please do please let me
13:34
know where i'm going wrong so directly
13:37
compared to pete's marine i think all
13:39
the extra details from duncan the eyes
13:42
the bullets they do help it stand out
13:46
that little bit more the stripes are
13:49
definitely brighter
13:51
but i do think i prefer
13:53
the wildwood wash for shading
13:57
rather than the right and flesh shade so
14:00
moving on to my fourth and final
14:02
tutorial it's painting iron warriors by
14:05
juan hidalgo so it was at this stage i
14:07
realized i'd built some of these marines
14:09
pretty terribly to be iron warriors the
14:12
stripes should be on the right shoulder
14:14
not the left the left should be black so
14:17
i tried to uh take take the pauldron off
14:20
ended up just ripping the arm off but
14:22
you know juan paints his
14:24
as a sub-assembly so i can too
14:28
and i totally meant to do that
14:49
so
14:56
[Music]
16:15
here we are with the finished results
16:17
and i have to say these are
16:20
my favorite hazard stripes that i've
16:22
done uh they are a bit chunkier and
16:25
there was just one simple phrase that
16:27
juan said in his tutorial was when
16:29
you're painting them on the pauldron
16:30
just make sure you keep the orientation
16:32
the same paint from top to bottom and
16:34
you'll keep your lines a lot straighter
16:36
and long behold
16:38
it worked i think with the other ones it
16:39
was moving around quite a lot and just
16:41
sort of lost where i was but with these
16:43
a bit chunkier
16:45
kept the marine straight kept the lines
16:47
a bit straighter and i'm really really
16:49
happy with the results
16:51
cutting in with the yellow paint to give
16:52
this the black stripes a bit of
16:53
weathering i would have preferred it if
16:55
they were a bit sharper that's down to
16:58
me but then glazing with that wild wood
17:00
and then with the flash gets yellow i
17:02
think just
17:03
really makes them stand out they look
17:06
really cool
17:07
i really enjoyed the glazing on the
17:09
armor on this one going down with the
17:12
wild wood and then up with the brighter
17:14
metallics worked really well i found
17:16
taking a bit of moisture off the brush
17:17
was really helpful for that
17:19
and glazing with contrast paints so much
17:23
easier than washes i've found so that is
17:26
quite noob friendly and i appreciate it
17:29
very very much on a technical level
17:32
i think this was my favorite tutorial
17:35
and i think the armor on this one is my
17:38
favorite i think the stripes are my
17:40
favorite but when looking at all of
17:42
these marines all together
17:45
i can't
17:46
help but look back
17:48
to my first shiny boy and i think with
17:52
juan's marine i think it's
17:56
perhaps the gold trim i think i prefer
17:59
the darker trim that's from like the
18:01
painted coach from duncan from pete
18:04
i think i like bright armor
18:06
dark trim so maybe there's an
18:08
amalgamation of these two in the future
18:11
and we'll see how that goes so here we
18:14
are heading towards the end of this
18:15
video i have painted my four iron
18:18
warriors i have elements of each that i
18:21
think i prefer i like the eyes
18:23
on duncan's marine i like the stripes
18:27
and the silver armor from juan's but the
18:31
bronze from the painting coach and that
18:34
being said these tutorials were
18:37
quite expensive and very very close with
18:40
this speed painting tutorial like i
18:42
still think the stripes on the legs are
18:45
some of the best that i have done
18:48
and that was all done for half the price
18:52
and half the time
18:54
and
18:54
yeah that was really really cool so as a
18:58
way of saying thank you to these
18:59
creators i've joined them all on patreon
19:01
for the next month and i also bought the
19:04
new kilting box through the painting
19:06
coaches affiliate link to goblin games
19:09
and i do really want your input in this
19:12
as well if you have a favorite from the
19:14
marines that i've painted here or if
19:16
you've painted iron warriors before
19:18
please let me know i'm i'm really eager
19:20
to to see what everyone thinks and what
19:23
i can potentially do to paint this
19:27
warpsmith i am jacket at painting and i
19:31
do need your help
19:43
[Music]
19:52
