Ok here we go with part 2 of - "before you start resin printing", i decided to do a small series of videos which will get you basically up to speed before to even delve into the myriad of things you need to learn in order to get successfully printed miniatures and models on your tabletop.
This is just an overview for you, it's not going into insane detail because, because I cover that more in other videos. but this is a solid overview for how to approach cleaning your models and some options available to you no matter what level of budget you have.

so welcome back to my two-part video
0:02
about getting started 3D printing and
0:04
honestly I'm glad now in reflection that
0:06
I've split this into two parts because I
0:09
think a lot of people probably know what
0:11
the original video was about that's
0:12
generally just covering how a 3D printer
0:15
Works whereas this time we're going to
0:17
cover what the postprocessing is like so
0:19
as a brief recap as I'm not a beginner
0:21
anymore I met up with guy from the
0:23
midwinter Min Channel drove down to his
0:25
house in Colchester and walked him
0:27
through the setup of a 3D printer and
0:30
got perfect prints off it straight away
0:32
if you've missed out on that and you're
0:33
interested in the journey go and check
0:35
out my previous video but right now
0:38
let's get into it because we're going to
0:39
have a look at what it takes to get
0:40
printers off the print bed once they're
0:42
printed to on your tabletop because
0:45
there are some things we need to go
0:46
through so thanks again to guy for
0:48
hosting me and to uniformation for
0:50
sponsoring this video please don't
0:52
forget to check out midwinter minis if
0:54
you haven't already it's a fantastic
0:56
Channel much larger than mine and I'm
0:57
proud to be featured on it but me who am
1:00
I I'm Ross and this is faux Hammer
1:03
videos so anyway after setting up the
1:05
printer and starting off some prints I
1:07
went back to guys that evening and
1:09
played some hero quest with him and his
1:10
friends and we had a little bit of a
1:12
disagreement over what the rules were
1:14
and according to the commenters on my
1:16
channel I was right though I'm sure if
1:19
he had comments on his Channel about who
1:21
was right it might go a little bit of a
1:23
different way anyway let's move on we've
1:26
got some prints what do we do now as I
1:29
said the night before we just threw some
1:31
models on the printer and clicked go and
1:33
this is all thanks to the gk2 it's got
1:35
its convenience features but the key
1:36
element was the fact that because it's
1:38
got a chamber heater it means that I
1:40
knew the environment it had be printed
1:41
in we're using the same resin the same
1:43
printer same environment temperature so
1:45
in that case my settings can just be
1:47
ported over to his printer fantastic and
1:50
I don't mind talking up the gk2 in a
1:52
sponsored video because I've been doing
1:54
it now for over a year for free so if
1:56
they want to pay me to talk about it
1:58
more I'm going to say yes if the printer
2:00
ever gets trumped by another one I'll
2:02
tell you why for free but right now
2:04
still the best printer go and check out
2:05
my review for more info or anyone's
2:08
review for that matter I haven't seen
2:09
anyone say it's bad so you know pay
2:11
attention to this printer but anyway
2:14
getting back to it the part I alluded to
2:16
earlier is the cleanup process with 3D
2:18
printing can be a pain now before I
2:21
arrived at guys I recommended that he
2:23
grab a large pickle jar and a silicon
2:25
baking tray from Amazon and I took him a
2:27
bottle of odorless methylated spirits
2:29
myself now as I walk you through the
2:31
cleaning process remember you must not
2:34
get resin on your skin if you do wash it
2:37
off thoroughly as soon as possible now
2:40
when you remove your VAP from a printer
2:42
it can drip resin which can end up on
2:44
you and or on your floor once again you
2:47
need to avoid touching this stuff so
2:49
good luck finding drops in the carpet
2:51
when you're looking for them later and
2:53
this is why I recommended the silicon
2:54
baking tray large silicon mats are great
2:57
for having a work area to help you
2:58
remove the prints from from the build
3:00
plate without having still uncured
3:02
residue touching your worktops now I
3:04
usually use a large silicon matap for
3:06
this but the tray with its rigid frame
3:08
also gives you a large area you can put
3:11
beneath your build plate to catch any
3:13
drips As you move it to your prep
3:15
surface and the tray actually kind of
3:18
doubles as your prep surface anyway and
3:20
because it's got raised edges it
3:21
prevents any of the resin from going
3:23
outside of this area this is a great
3:25
two-in-one tool but without this at
3:27
least grab yourself a silicon m as a
3:30
prep area you can grab a 3D printed one
3:32
for about 20 or $30 or you can get an
3:35
Amazon basic silicon dog food map for
3:37
less than a tener also if you've got a
3:40
printer where the brand are being really
3:41
cheap you might have plastic slidy feet
3:44
in which case this is also a useful
3:46
surface area to stand it on but once
3:49
it's in this area just slide your putty
3:51
knife under it and so long as you've got
3:52
your base layers exposure time daring
3:55
right I've got a different video on that
3:56
we're not going into it here but it
3:58
should just get under the edge of your
4:00
support layers and they should slide off
4:02
easily without having to break any of
4:04
the resin in doing so make sure you're
4:06
wearing gloves throughout this entire
4:08
process because again resin can Splash
4:11
everywhere this has already become quite
4:13
messy and that's just getting the model
4:15
off the build plate now washing and just
4:19
like my own wargamer resin there are
4:21
other water washable resins out there so
4:23
you don't need special or harmful
4:26
chemicals but water washable resins have
4:28
a couple of drawbacks one is that they
4:30
are water absorbent so you can't leave
4:33
them sat in water for too long without
4:35
them becoming brittle and two is that
4:38
harmful chemicals are still much better
4:40
at cleaning them and you may have heard
4:42
people talk about cleaning prints with
4:44
isopropanol and that's fine but over
4:46
time I've found that the better solution
4:49
is industrial grade odorless methylated
4:51
Spirit and the reason this is better in
4:53
my opinion is unlike isopropanol which
4:56
becomes cloudy over time within a few
4:58
months if not weeks your whole vat will
5:00
turn into a mix of resiny sludge
5:02
methylated Spirit stays clean and non-s
5:05
sludgy forever I've actually used the
5:07
same vat and a follow-up ultrasonic
5:09
cleaner for well over a year without
5:11
changing the fluid once but I think the
5:14
thing that helps the most is a two-stage
5:17
wash cycle and this is why I recommended
5:19
the pickle jar which is also a fun
5:22
YouTube channel you might want to check
5:23
out you see the more resin you can get
5:25
off your model in smaller volumes of
5:28
cleaning agent the better
5:30
I heavily slush my model in a meths
5:32
filled pickle jar first before moving
5:34
them to a more powerful cleaner well
5:36
actually now I've been doing this for
5:38
years I've got two pickle jars so now I
5:40
do a first rinse a second rinse then an
5:43
ultrasonic bath to clean out the deepest
5:46
recesses but if you have nothing else
5:48
and are just starting you can get away
5:50
with just one large pickle jar then when
5:53
you're ready get a second then get a
5:55
proper wash unit which normally comes as
5:58
a wash and cure bundle
6:00
but once your models are thoroughly
6:02
rinsed and you've got all of the liquid
6:04
resin off the surfaces and out of the
6:05
recesses and even the inside assuming
6:08
you hollowed your model which is an
6:10
option you can do in your slicer you
6:12
then need to do the final cure and
6:14
before you do this make sure you've left
6:16
your models out to dry on a Surface
6:18
because that will be able to tell you
6:20
whether or not you've got fully cleaned
6:23
models all of the surfaces should appear
6:26
to be the same texture and you can
6:28
normally tell what's still liquid resin
6:30
as it has a gloopy glossiness and you
6:32
can still see it in the
6:34
recesses if you really want to push it
6:36
to the nth degree and get everything out
6:38
it should be fine so long as you're
6:40
sosing it around a lot in some good
6:42
cleaning fluid but if you really want to
6:44
push it to the next degree you can blow
6:46
it out with an airbrush you can use a
6:48
toothbrush to clean out the recesses
6:50
just don't ever use that again in your
6:52
mouth or you can even use a spritz
6:54
bottle to try and spray into some of the
6:56
deeper areas the point is you want as
6:59
much if not every last piece of liquid
7:02
resin off and out of this model before
7:05
we do the next stage because whatever we
7:07
do here is now fully committed and what
7:09
your model is going to look like forever
7:12
now the main reason we need to cure is
7:14
because even when cleaned and dried the
7:17
surfaces of the model still contain
7:19
traces of resin which isn't fully cured
7:22
and again you should not get this stuff
7:24
on your skin so for all of this process
7:27
you are still wearing gloves now if you
7:30
are a beginner and you're just getting
7:31
into resin printing you can cure prints
7:33
out in the sun but depending on where
7:35
you live this could take anything from a
7:37
few to several hours if not
7:40
days what people tend to do at first is
7:43
opt for more DIY options buying a UV
7:46
curing station for nail art is common my
7:49
first curing station I put a UV LED
7:51
strip inside a paint tin with a solar
7:54
powered turntable at the bottom but the
7:57
best option is a dedicated curing
7:59
station which as mentioned previously
8:01
normally comes bundled with a wash
8:03
station too there are cheap options and
8:06
expensive options but I've stopped
8:07
reviewing these in general because they
8:10
all do the same thing and the price
8:11
differences only tend to afflect the
8:13
size or the build quality of the housing
8:16
and
8:16
mechanics until somebody invents one of
8:19
these that suddenly makes me go oh my
8:21
god wow I just don't see much point in
8:23
covering them get the biggest one you
8:25
can afford that you can fit in your home
8:28
and then the final thing you need to
8:29
know is that whilst you shouldn't touch
8:31
the resin itself because of its toxicity
8:34
whilst the resin's curing the reaction
8:36
will also produce volatile organic
8:39
compounds or voc's which pump into the
8:42
air now some printers are sealed others
8:44
are sealed and have inbuilt carbon
8:46
filters but even they only do so much to
8:49
reduce the potential hazards in the air
8:51
whilst going through this process with
8:53
guy it wasn't actually the resin curing
8:55
voc's that were so bad but it was the
8:58
methylated spirit which which caused his
8:59
Dyson air filter to Skyrocket into the
9:02
red levels and remain there for several
9:04
hours despite both windows being
9:07
open now I have no idea how sensitive
9:10
this particular air filter is and as guy
9:12
told me himself he's seen report that
9:14
this thing can jump into the red levels
9:16
just from somebody changing their carpet
9:18
but regardless I think the long story
9:20
short is that you don't want to be sat
9:22
all day breathing this stuff in how
9:24
hazardous this stuff is is anyone's
9:26
guess because even I'm yet to see
9:29
content from a reliable and trusted
9:30
Source about how harmful the chemicals
9:33
from this process are now on the
9:35
Grapevine I've heard everything from the
9:37
volume of pollutants in the process is
9:39
so small it can't possibly affect you to
9:43
we're all going to die and the truth is
9:46
guys I've got no idea so when you embark
9:49
on this process do so at your own
9:52
Comfort level for me I pump fumes
9:54
outside using an extractor but for a
9:57
long time I was sat in the same room
9:59
room with several printers running and
10:00
just left the window open other people
10:03
use hydroponic grow tents to house their
10:04
printers in and do the same by pumping
10:07
the fumes outside Others May only use
10:09
the printer in a garage or shed but then
10:12
you're back to the combating temperature
10:14
issues so you do you in regard to this
10:17
process but if you have any pets or kids
10:19
be weary especially in regard to
10:21
Dripping liquid resin on the floor where
10:23
they may play walk or even lick now as I
10:26
look back over the resin printing
10:28
process which is has actually taken two
10:30
videos I saw it more and more from guy's
10:32
point of view as he's more of a beginner
10:34
it does look arduous and messy just from
10:37
this overview but I have added a lot of
10:40
why certain best practices work along
10:42
with some options for people too so
10:44
whilst it's long I've probably gone into
10:46
a bit more detail than the brief
10:48
overview once you get your head around
10:50
it and go through it once it really is
10:52
just a case of get a printer dial in the
10:54
settings slice print clean wash and cure
10:58
with those last four four steps being
10:59
quite rinse and repeat you literally
11:01
just slice print wash and cure you don't
11:04
need to buy a printer or reconfigure
11:06
your settings every time but you will
11:09
need gloves for each step of every stage
11:12
and it's why I do most of my stuff in
11:14
batches now this whole process did open
11:17
my eyes to just how daunting this could
11:19
be to somebody coming at this fresh and
11:21
with the potential risks involved I
11:23
completely understand that this is not
11:25
everyone's cup of tea far from it
11:28
printers are slowly getting easier to
11:30
use with manufacturers adopting much of
11:32
this stuff which has been DIY for ages
11:34
directly into their Hardware with resin
11:36
heers being the latest popular edition
11:39
next we need to see Brands adopt better
11:41
filtration systems and just options in
11:43
general now in all honesty I hope this
11:46
video hasn't put you off resin printing
11:48
but I also hope it hasn't encouraged you
11:50
either many people love it many others
11:53
hate it both choices are absolutely fine
11:56
so long as you choose what's right for
11:57
you all I wanted to do was give you an
12:00
honest and unfiltered Journey so that
12:02
you can make the most informed decisions
12:05
and if you decide to go for it know what
12:07
you're going to have to get alongside
12:08
the printer to get everything working
12:10
which is basically a printer probably a
12:12
decent USB drive a silicone Trail mat
12:15
and a couple of pickle jars along with a
12:17
ton of gloves at the very least beyond
12:20
that you can get a wash and cure station
12:22
when you're ready I'd honestly love to
12:25
know what you think after going through
12:26
these two videos is resin printing for
12:29
you again either options fine but it'd
12:31
be great to weigh up what people have
12:34
come out of the back of this video
12:35
thinking have I changed your mind from
12:37
what you thought before I want to say
12:39
thanks for watching and especially to
12:41
our members who help us afford to make
12:42
these videos and are just generally
12:44
wonderful people for giving me money
