here we are again with another paint
0:01
review on a 3D printing Channel but
0:03
since everyone was super happy with my
0:05
approach to keeping the last one short
0:07
my intention here is to do the same
0:09
again after all how long do you really
0:11
want to spend watching paint dry these
0:13
villain inks have a somewhat specific
0:14
use case assuming you want to add some
0:16
natural dirt and grime to your models
0:18
get a somewhat realistic water ONN Vibe
0:20
and do this incredibly quickly these are
0:23
some paints you probably want in Your
0:25
Arsenal but there is a knack to using
0:27
them actually there's a few but that's a
0:30
big part of the point of me making a
0:31
video and if you're looking at these
0:32
you'll probably want to know the fastest
0:34
way of getting started so hi I'm Ross
0:37
and this is f a videos right then first
0:39
up if you don't know these are enamel
0:42
paints now on the plus side what this
0:43
means is that the paint has incredibly
0:46
long working time put it on a Model move
0:48
it about or even take it off again for
0:50
hours or sometimes even days after
0:53
you've applied it but on the flip side
0:55
it does mean you need some more
0:56
specialist materials to thin them down
0:58
you can't use water specifically you
1:00
need artist grade mineral spirits and
1:03
you should not put natural hair brushes
1:05
anywhere near these or the thinners
1:08
because they'll both wreck the strength
1:10
of your bristles very fast so yeah
1:12
beyond your basic set of acrylic tools
1:14
and processes this requires a little
1:16
something extra but boy are they are joy
1:19
to use because when you're after this
1:20
style of result it makes painting all
1:23
miniature painting incredibly easy now
1:26
you can buy these paints individually
1:28
but in the set you get seven colors
1:30
ior of the damn goons Grime dystopian
1:33
Brown sector rust coelia green coia
1:36
green whatever decay of death and
1:38
carrying Crimson but this is basically
1:41
black dark brown light brown light
1:42
reddish brown deep bright green pale
1:44
green and Crimson like a gory red now if
1:47
you want the full set it's 90 quid well
1:50
actually it's 80 quid when bought as a
1:51
set from element games because they've
1:53
got a discount or you can get the
1:55
individual 30ml bottles which are $12.99
1:57
each but it's worth knowing that if
1:59
you're in the us or somewhere they ship
2:01
if you get it from the Grim do
2:03
compendium website which are the
2:04
creators of this product you can also
2:06
get it as a bundle which includes access
2:09
to some of their exclusive videos my set
2:12
was provided by well actually it was
2:14
refunded by element games I'd already
2:16
ordered them myself but they said if you
2:18
do us a video we'll send you them for
2:19
now I can't really argue with that since
2:22
as I said I'd ordered them anyway I
2:24
fully intended to buy them why not take
2:26
them for free but review time so first
2:29
up I love the design of these the
2:31
bottles they come in look Ace and really
2:33
sell that Grim dark buy from the off but
2:36
these are nothing on the limited edition
2:38
250ml bottles they offered as part of
2:40
the crowdfunding campaign that actually
2:43
launched all of these now I've been
2:45
after a model that I could use all of
2:46
these paints on to save time and I
2:48
couldn't think of anything better than
2:50
this dredge Marine character by mzgee
2:52
and many of you should be able to tell
2:55
what this model's heavily inspired by
2:57
we're all thinking Bioshock right but
3:00
anyway as a quick aside if you don't
3:01
know mesg he is an amazing painter and
3:04
now sculptor so I'll Chuck you a link to
3:06
his channel along with this model and
3:08
more like it down in the description
3:11
also in the description is a link to
3:12
these paints so please click that link
3:14
before buying them as I'll make a
3:15
commission on your purchase and it'll
3:17
cost you nothing and I like getting paid
3:19
to show off products assuming you want
3:21
to buy the products if you aren't
3:24
interested in them then I guess well
3:25
done for sticking with me this far in
3:27
the video what I don't get money for
3:30
though is meses models when you buy them
3:32
in fact I'm still paying for his patreon
3:34
even though I've promoted them loads but
3:37
despite my assumed arrogant YouTuber
3:39
privilege yeah I'm still suggesting you
3:41
buy them they're they're awesome anyway
3:43
getting this model ready for these
3:44
enamels was really simple I watched some
3:47
of the free tutorial videos for these
3:49
products to get an idea of how to apply
3:51
each one again that video is linked
3:53
below and I'm showing it on screen now I
3:56
literally just primed my model in black
3:57
and painted the stones with a light gray
4:00
then I went in with a bright red for the
4:01
capes and due to the fact that you're
4:03
going to dirty all of these base layers
4:04
down I find it's a good idea to start
4:07
really really bright and actually that
4:09
was recommended to me by a guy from Spen
4:12
painting the the guy was Spen of Spen
4:14
painting check out Spen painting real
4:17
name Spencer moving on I painted the
4:19
armor with white and the fleshy bits
4:21
with dect tan now I wanted to do them
4:23
with racko flesh but I've got no idea
4:25
where my bottle of rakar flesh's gone
4:27
now for Speed I did use an airbr brush
4:29
for this but you can paint it on in fact
4:32
arguably the more texture variation you
4:34
have on your model's surface the better
4:36
it's going to work with these washers
4:38
and whilst I had some overspray the
4:40
first layer of enamels should sort all
4:42
that out anyway but I did reestablish
4:45
some of the red areas just to make them
4:47
really pop and I went in with some Thin
4:49
Ren flesh shade on the fleshy areas
4:51
before adding some drwy Violet to deepen
4:53
them down even further and again both of
4:56
those tips were available from the free
4:58
tutorial which covers creat flesh tones
5:01
and finally before the enamels I went in
5:03
with some silver for the metal areas and
5:05
Val's liquid metal gold for the gold
5:07
armor trim and so far this whole process
5:09
took me about an hour now it's not neat
5:11
but it doesn't need to be and that's the
5:13
glory of going with a grim dark style
5:15
and using these paints speaking of as
5:18
per the tutorial I started off with some
5:20
goons Grime all over the model because
5:22
it's just a fantastic unifier thin this
5:25
down Splash it on and it's pretty much
5:27
done as mentioned earlier you really can
5:29
play about with this stuff for hours and
5:32
I didn't need to apply any gloss varnish
5:34
or anything like that I was able to pull
5:36
this back off the surface using a cotton
5:37
Bud which some of you may call a Q-tip
5:40
in fact if anyone can explain where the
5:42
term Q-tip comes from for these I'd
5:45
really appreciate it but again as per
5:47
the guide you can also apply this quite
5:49
heavily and use a soft brush to drag
5:51
down the wash and create natural looking
5:53
streaks now I could honestly show you
5:56
every single step but the process is
5:59
basically the same stick it on and play
6:02
about with it I used the various Browns
6:04
across the armor and wood areas I
6:06
applied the rust over the metal areas
6:08
and a mix of the greens over the gold
6:10
areas to create a weathered aged patina
6:12
effect after that you just throw some
6:14
Crimson over the fleshy areas then you
6:17
just need to spend some time
6:18
manipulating it until you're happy let
6:20
it dry off a bit add a bit more take
6:22
more off streak it swipe it splotch it
6:25
stipple it do whatever you want to add
6:28
variation and texture to the surface of
6:30
the model this is so freaking easy to do
6:34
seriously though In fairness I wouldn't
6:37
be any kind of decent reviewer without
6:38
pointing out any quirks and for this
6:41
well there was only one in all of the
6:43
bottles the neck of each one had a load
6:45
of congealed crud in that neck area and
6:49
all of this needed to be pushed back
6:50
into the bottle as it left no breathing
6:53
room for the pipette to actually suck
6:55
because there was no air getting back
6:57
into the bottle and in a couple of them
6:59
in the tip of the pipette this had also
7:02
gathered some congealed crud all I
7:04
needed to do was just pop a pin in here
7:06
and pop it out you can actually remove
7:08
the pipet tube from the bulb I actually
7:10
had to Google what the top of the
7:12
squeezy bit was called but anyway you
7:14
just tip the crud out of the back of
7:16
this pepet tube back into the bottle and
7:19
you're solid from there shake the living
7:21
hell out of the stuff to ensure you get
7:23
a really deep and Rich color when
7:25
applying it and I honestly wouldn't even
7:28
say this as a negative ative it's just
7:30
something to be aware of hobby products
7:32
aren't like technology products many of
7:34
the greatest hobby products have several
7:36
quirks to them just see my video on
7:38
dirty down rust as an example but in
7:40
this case The Quirk is actually an
7:42
opportunity to showcase exactly what
7:44
Grim dark compendium have done right
7:46
with their new product launch that in my
7:48
opinion should embarrass several larger
7:50
companies and that is that they've not
7:53
only done videos showing you how to use
7:55
it but they have a full and detailed
7:57
write up of every product in this line
8:00
and how to get the most out of each
8:01
color and the video coupled with that
8:04
guide is exactly how I was able to paint
8:06
this model so easily and quickly like
8:08
this information's right there under the
8:10
goons Grime info it says a Vortex mixer
8:13
comes in highly recommended now in lie
8:15
of one of these I'd recommend just
8:16
sticking the back of a brush in your
8:18
bottle and twirling it round a lot but I
8:21
am thankful for my Vortex mixer I've got
8:23
a video on those too now I will be
8:25
honest and say in my opinion this web
8:27
page can be a little bit hard to read at
8:29
times because well there's a lot of
8:31
white text on a detailed grayscale
8:34
background and the index at the top in
8:36
red is well it's also tricky to read and
8:39
it's in a bit of an odd order but at
8:42
least the web page isn't dripping with
8:43
ads everywhere so you know that's a
8:45
solid plus and look this is paint like
8:49
me picking on a web page a static text
8:51
web page for all that should show you
8:54
that I'm having to scrape the bottom of
8:55
the barrel just to find any fault here
8:58
with this product I love Grim dark style
9:01
painting I was a member of Zak Cason's
9:03
Grim dark compendium patreon for a long
9:06
time because personally I am a huge fan
9:09
I was planning to buy these myself and
9:12
sure there are other products out there
9:14
that you can use for these techniques
9:15
though I don't know about you but I
9:17
would rather support a fellow Creator in
9:20
our industry over many a large company
9:23
and it's mainly because of the value ad
9:25
and the love and care they put into a
9:27
product and the value ad here is that
9:29
not only do you get these products but
9:31
you also get access to guides on using
9:33
them for free alongside it and then if
9:37
you really want to push it to the next
9:38
level there's a patreon a Facebook group
9:41
and a Discord server for further steps
9:44
but I knock this model out in just a few
9:46
hours by following the free guide alone
9:50
so I guess in summary if you want to
9:52
paint this way definitely get these if
9:55
you don't want to paint this way thanks
9:57
for watching if you do like this sort of
9:59
stuff there are other creators working
10:01
on content too and I'll drop links below
10:03
the video for all of them as a thanks
10:05
for the inspiration and advice that
10:08
they've given me and that includes
10:10
people like the painting coach artist
10:12
Opus the painting phase and as mentioned
10:14
earlier spend painting I want to give a
10:16
huge thanks to you for watching and to
10:18
our members who are on screen now please
10:20
consider joining them they get Early
10:22
Access their names up in lights Discord
10:24
roles and exclusive videos so until next
10:27
time would you kindly buy these paints
10:30
and use my affiliate links before you do
10:32
and if anyone can tell me what inspired
10:33
part of that quote let me know down in
10:35
the comments I have mentioned it once
10:37
already in the video let me know see you
10:39
