Hey everyone, welcome back to Fohhammer videos. So today we're looking at a really quick
0:04
and easy way to paint PowerSword using just your airbrush and three colours. So stick around for that
0:09
right after this. Right, no mucking about, straight into it. You want three colours, a dark, a middle and a white
0:25
You also need some tape like this masking tape from Tamia, but any of do
0:30
And then on top of that, you also need some masking material. I prefer silly putty because blue tack's too sticky
0:35
So just pull off your masking material like this. It's, as I say, this is better than blue tack
0:42
You'll find out why later when we come to the reveal, but basically blue tack when you stick it to a model is too tacky
0:47
and you can start pulling paint off as well as leaving it stuck onto the model everywhere
0:52
With this, just wrap it around the model, pinch it in, get it wrapped round
0:56
and make sure that all of the bits that are sticking out, model-wise are covered. Here on the other side, again, just wrap it round everywhere. It's quite
1:05
obvious, but just make sure everything's covered. When it gets to the detail, like the hand
1:12
just make a little bit, and then when you go over the sword, try and cover all the bits of the
1:17
hand. We can leave the hilt sticking out because we'll paint that with a metallic paint later
1:23
But yeah, so just wrap it around, check it all, make sure every part of the model's covered
1:27
pinch together and you are set and ready to go. I did this next stage off camera
1:32
but basically just paint your sword in the darkest colour you've got. Then once that's dry
1:37
tape up your sword using your masking tape, make sure that it lines up to the centre of the sword
1:41
and goes to the edge. And then on the back, do the adjacent side so that they don't sort of match up together
1:48
And then when you done it should look something like this Then get your mid colour something really really bright into your airbrush
1:59
This is going to be the majority of the sword colour. So this is really the meat of the tutorial
2:05
Just take that mid-tone colour and just gently spritz the sword, starting from the centre
2:12
and then work out to the left and the right, gradually, very gradually, building up the layers on the sword
2:17
until you've got a nice transition from really, really opaque mid-tone, but you've left some edges of that really dark colour
2:32
So for the next stage, I just mixed in a load of white to make it kind of a just off
2:37
a bluey off-white. You can do it with white. I think the only colour you want to be careful of is reds and oranges
2:43
In that case, mix in more of a lemon yellow from Tamia or
2:47
pro-acral colours because that will keep the luminosity of the red rather than making it pink
2:53
But with this, just spray it a really thin line up the front and back
2:57
right in the middle of the highlight you've already done. And then this next bit's always my favourite bit
3:07
peeling back the tape just to see how well it's worked. So you can already see the effect coming into fruition there
3:14
But let's do the other side. So with that same tape, once it's dry, you can use it again and just tape up the other side
3:22
Just be careful when you do this time. You don't want to stick it down too early. Make sure the paint is set before you do it
3:27
I had to do this off camera rather than doing it on camera because it was an absolute nightmare trying to do it
3:33
But there you go. Just tape up the opposite sides. This time, repeat the steps basically
3:38
But instead of doing the middle, you want to do the edges. So just spray the top and the bottom on the front and the back again in sort of small bursts just to build up that colour gradually But you got a nice fade and then it dark in the middle and then sort of the blue colour or whatever colour you chosen at the edges
3:58
And just keep going. Like, I had to do a couple of passes here just to get this right
4:03
Once you've done, add you white or you like a colour again to make it almost white, but not, you know, mostly white, but then just to a hint
4:11
of that main colour in there and then spray the white on the edges as well
4:15
And then this, like before, is always a fun piece when you peel off the tape
4:19
and you can see just how cool the effect looks. And this is already 90% of your power sword done
4:25
You can see there the transition dark to light, light to dark. And then the other fun piece is peeling away the putty
4:32
I could watch this all day. It's so therapeutic. Just be careful you don't rip away parts of the..
4:37
Oh, no, I think I have. Yeah, let's watch that again. Oh, there it goes
4:43
So yeah, just be careful when you're doing this. It is really, really fun when you're doing the reveal of the model
4:48
And as you can see, if you've used blue tack as masking material before, this stuff's great because it doesn't stick to the surface at all
4:55
You get a couple of bits stuck in the sort of nooks and crannies, but we'll pick them away in a minute
4:59
But yeah, this is again, I could watch, if somebody did a TikTok just doing like reveals like this
5:05
I could watch it all day long. But it is one of my most fun parts is when you start to take all of
5:11
that away and it comes away so easily and so cleanly and then just roll it up into a ball and then
5:16
pick off any excess bits that have kind of got stuck to the surface but yeah it is a really
5:21
enjoyable part of the process this and then for the final step really we'll go over to the painting
5:31
desk and i got here some bold titanium white which i going to use pure and then just use this to paint up the edges of your sword It perfect for edge painting this because the sword edges are so sharp It really really simple to do and simple to follow
5:46
Best advice here, don't use a wet palette. You know, just stick it on a bit of plastic or any kind of palette
5:52
but you want to keep your paint tacky. If it's too fluid, it's just going to run all over the model
5:56
So there's a tip. And it took me a while. Once I'd got a wet palette, I was like, ooh, a wet palette for everything
6:02
But yeah, when it comes to edge highlighting or anything, like that you just want the smallest amount of water for control and wet pallets can really do you a
6:10
disservice here so again just paint up all four edges the hardest bit though is going to be
6:15
paint in the middle so just be really careful gently touch it and still until the model kind of
6:21
paints itself and then gently picks up the paint off your brush and then go all the way up to
6:27
the top and that's your power sword pretty much done the final steps for
6:34
really optional as to how you want to do it. You can use a contrast paint to highlight these parts
6:39
but I use this really bright aluminium colour because it paints on in one coat
6:45
no matter if you're painting over black, white or anything, and it's so fluid, it just goes straight on
6:50
So for a nice, quick, easy paint job, I'm just going to turn these silver
6:54
and you'll see why in a sack. And that's it, and that's the whole model complete, and I think you can agree
7:10
that's turned out to be quite an effective, decent power sword. So for more from Fohhammer, like, comment, subscribe
