Last Updated on June 29, 2021 by FauxHammer
Ok, sure I’m late to the game in writing this but I hope it helps some of you. I tend to have a process when it comes to writing articles. I’m a deep thinker and want to figure stuff out myself. and when I do that I share what I’ve learned with the internet to hopefully save you the effort. So here, I’m trying to understand the Breakdown of the Space Marine Heroes collections. what you get in Japan vs what you get in the rest of the world. vs what models are available in other boxed sets so you can figure out where to get every model.
Yeah, right now at the time of publication, there is no series 4 on the horizon, this may be a waste of time, but I needed this, I wanted to see what models were available where and how you can get hands-on with every single one. and I’ve done it, now I’m here to share it with you. You can still pick up these sets in a few odd places, however (at a scalpers premium), so you haven’t totally missed out.
So here we go. the full and complete breakdown of all of the Space Marine Heroes collections in all of the available Series.

Space Marine Heroes – Introduction
Space Marine Heroes is a blind box product, each series has a collection of models. You can buy individual boxes and will randomly get one of the several marines in each set. it’s a surprise you see. You are never 100% what you are getting.
Think of things like Treasure X or LOL surprise for kids, it;s like that but with cool warhamemr models.
This sort of thing is much more popular in Japan where Games Workshop is starting to make an impact. This style of the product initially launched to attract that market. The models are incredibly well-detailed push-fit models, each with its own sculpted diorama style base. Kind of like the Warhammer Underworlds models. Each model has a choice of heads, both helmeted and unhelmeted options.
These models are also produced on slightly different sprues to normal games workshop offerings. these sprues are quite thin and round. the sprue gates are also much smaller making removal of the parts much easier. these are very much like Gundam sprues rather than the heavy chunky sprues we are used to.

Personally, I prefer much this style as the smaller sprue games makes removal so much easier and cleanup even easier too. Please swap all our sprues to this style GW.
This change in sprue style leads me to suspect that GW Uk did not produce these models and they were instead outsourced to model makers in the east.
It was no surprise that us hungry westerners started shouting up “we want the cool unique models” and so, Games Workshop delivered.
By Series 3, games Workshop realised that we aren’t too keen on the blind-box approach, we would rather just buy the whole set in one go without the hassle of swapping or paying eBay scalpers. So from series 3 outside of Japan, if you buy a whole retail box, you are certain to get one of each model.
Each release also had a number (normally 1 or 2) of ultra-rare secret models which were not shown on the boxes as part of the collection in any more than a silhouette. Though again, with series 3 when released Globally, there was one of the secret models in each retail boxed set.
There are differences between the Japanese release and the rest of the world. Specifically, the number and style of some models are different.
And that is the point of this article. showing all the models and which is from where.
Space Marine Heroes – Series 1
Space Marine Heroes Series 1 lauched like most 40k releases do, with Ultramarines emblazoned all over the artwork. (not sure why they keep pushing these, the only people I’ve seen actually paint Ultramarines are GW employees – let the flaming begin). Despite coming out after Primaris Marines had launched with 40k 8th edition, this set was focussed on the now classic Tactical marines. They may forever be the best sculpted Tactical Marnes that GW have or will ever produce(d).
Whilst the box art is Ultramarines, none of these models have any chapter specific mouldings, so you can paint them how you like for any faction.

In Space Marine Adventures, this model is an Imperial Fist named Brother Grimm
This model was one of the 2 secret models in Japan
Space Marine Heroes – Series 2
This time Games Workshop brought back Space Marine Terminators, with the best sculpts since Space Hulk. Like Space Hulk, the artwork was focused on the Blood Angels chapter but akin to series 1 there are no chapter-specific markings on the models. Due to Primaris now taking Space Marine designs in a new direction, I expect these may be the last terminators we see. at least for a good while. I’d love to see some Primaris terminators, however.

Pustus the Vile
Availability
- Japan: Yes – Paint Set Only
- Rest of World: No
Despite being the poster boy when this series was announced on WarhammerCommunity.com. And with him featuring as one of the “7” models to collect on SpaceMarineHeroes.com (though all the box art and included paperwork say there are only 6 to collect). Pustus the Vile is not currently available outside of Japan where he was exclusive to Space Marine Heroes Series 3 Paint Set.
Like the previous 2 sets, I expect at some point this model may become available in a future Space Marine Adventures game.
Who knows? Time will tell.
Space Marine Heroes – Series 4
Series 4 hasd been hotly anticipated. at the time of posting this article it has been 2 years since series 3 released in Japan.
Spikeybits did suggest at the beginning of the year that there was a bit of a teaser which could have meant a series 4 announcement was coming soon, but this turned out to be nothing more than a Space Marine Heroes painting Competition. (read about it all here) But at least heroes is still getting some press so the line isn’t fully dead in the water just yet.
A lot has happened in the world over the last year and hopefully this is the reason we’ve had no progress and that a resurgence is coming soon. After all, the existing lines sold out super fast.
For now and until I get an update one way or the other, I’ll remain forever hopeful and leave this section as a placeholder.
Space Marine Heroes – Series 4 Model List

And if you live in the states don’t forget the six (two sets of three) that are in the spacemarine adventures expansions.
The description of series 3 seems to be wrong. It’s using the numbers of series 1. Also the Scabboth model is missing the availability information.
In series 1 you said Brother Aethor is only in the adventure game outside the US and not available in hero boxes. I have a model of Brother Aethor that i got from a US hero box.
